More descriptively also now as the Sacramento Museum of History, Science, Space and Technology, this museum will interest both young and old alike. The emphasis, here is on hands-on education so children, in particular, will get enjoyment from a visit without feeling they are in a stifling environment. In the realm of history, unsurprisingly, the museum explores Sacramento's varied past, in particular, the gold industry. Visitors even get to look at and examine gold specimens. New historic exhibitions are constantly being added and in the past have included such topics as the role of Chinese workers in the Gold Rush era, the history of children in Sacramento and an archaeological exhibition of findings from the city all displayed under a beautifully lit glass floor. Other permanent highlights include a Planetarium and a simulated space shuttle ride. A replica of Sacramento's 1854 City Hall stands within the museum and houses artefacts from that period. For nature lovers, why not go on the discovery nature trail where you might catch a look at ducks, hawks or turtles. There is so much here to enjoy that you could easily come back again and again and still learn something new. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children aged 13 to 17 and $3 for children aged 4 to 12 (under 4s enter free). Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 5pm. The Discovery Museum is located at 101 I Street, in Old Sacramento. |
