California State Railroad Museum

After the discovery of gold in California it was necessary to build a railroad from the mines to the Pacific coast and so, Sacramento's first railway lines were laid. This historic moment is commemorated in the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento. The Museum includes 21 restored locomotives and railcars plus exhibits and guided tours. Not just for the rail enthusiast, the museum is an interesting look into bygone days in Sacramento. It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and is great value with adult admission at $6 and a child's rate of $2 (free for children aged 5 and under).
To really get the most from your visit, though, we recommend the train excursions which are organised by the museum. These depart on the hour from Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot, not far from the museum. Sit back and enjoy a 40 minute tour along the banks of the Sacramento River, a great way to see the area. Tickets are priced at $6 for adults and $3 for children aged 6 to 17. Train excursions are organised every weekend from April to September though theme trains also run in October, November and December and are especially good for children.
